A Cubs fan wakes up from a long coma feeling very much out of sorts and he tells his son he would like to return to a place that represented an emotional touchstone for him. Wrigley Field, the man says, was his greatest source of joy throughout his life. The man and his son head to the North Side of Chicago and they make their way to the ballpark.
As they approach the Friendly Confines, the man looks to his son and says, “It’s different here. It’s so different here.”
And now you know where the Cubs got their new marketing slogan for the 2022 season.
I’d really like to be less curmudgeonly about this, but there’s just something about this that rubs me the wrong way. It’s the whole idea of hyping up the Wrigley experience rather than ensuring the product on the field is the best it can be. Am I reading too much into it? Probably.
Opening Day. April 7.
