Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/9/21): Cubs 10, Cardinals 5 – Bases-Loaded Doubles Key Romp
The Cubs and Cardinals are both down in the standings, but that doesn’t matter when these two old rivals meet. Chicago finally got their offense in gear Friday and were able to run up a big victory over St. Louis at a loud and sunny Wrigley Field.
The Cubs kicked off the scoring right out of the gate in the bottom of the 1st when Joc Pederson hit a three-run double that just got out of the glove of diving outfielder Dylan Carlson. Kyle Hendricks was very good with the only blemish being a pair of singles that knocked in two runs in the 3rd inning.
Pinch-hitter Ian Happ added an RBI single in the 4th to increase the lead to 4-2. The home team really put the game out reach in a five-run 7th inning. Kris Bryant made a brief appearance off the bench to club a bases-loaded double and Patrick Wisdom hit his 12th home run to put the game on ice.
Jason Heyward added one more run with a base hit in the bottom of the 8th to bring the score to 10-2. That was more than enough for the Cubs to take the easy 10-5 W. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Won
They had the bases loaded two times and hit base-clearing doubles in each at-bat. That is a pretty good way to win some baseball games.
Javy Báez was able to score all the way from first on Pederson’s shallow double in the 1st inning. That extra run allowed the Cubs to keep the lead throughout the game.
Stats That Matter
- Hendricks was very good in winning his 11th game of the season: 6.1 IP, 2 R, 7 H, 1 K, and 1 BB.
- Willson Contreras got hit in the head by a pitch in the 4th inning, but he stayed in the game and appeared to be okay.
- Heyward also was hit by a pitch, walked, and had two hits in an overall good game.
Hey, it’s always nice to beat the Cardinals. Hendricks is still an excellent pitcher and is a joy to watch on the mound.
Game two of the series is Saturday at 6:15pm CT on the FOX national broadcast. Zach Davies takes on lefty Kwang Hyun Kim and a contest that is also available on 670 The Score.
